OPI When Monkeys Fly!

Hi you guys! Happy hump of the week! :-)

Today, continuing with the OPI Oz The Great and Powerful Collection, I have another glitter from the collection to share with you. When Monkeys Fly! is made up of small and medium silver reflective hexagon and large gold hexagon glitter pieces, all in a sheer base.

Oh gosh, I feel like this polish is not at all like the others in the collection. While the rest of the collection is soft, understated, and elegantly fun, this one is a bit garish thanks to the large gold glitter pieces. It also has some obvious formula problems, as you can see from the swatches. The large gold pieces are curling up such that their edges lift off of the nails during application, a big no-no when it comes to glitter polish. This then causes a tendency for all the large gold pieces to cluster around and stick to each other, making it difficult to place them on the nails. The end result is quite messy.

After many complaints about the curling glitter issue, OPI owned up to the problem and offered replacements for those who bought this polish. Here is what they had to say via their Facebook page:

"We have determined that in some instances, due to the glitter’s size and shape, it can curl over time as it sits in the lacquer base. This was not experienced during field-testing and is now being addressed. Those of you who are dissatisfied can contact our customer support team with the batch number listed on the bottom of the bottle and they will replace it with another Oz shade of your choice."

It's surprising that a big polish company like OPI would have missed this issue during their initial testing, but it's definitely heartening to see them step up and offer to make right for anyone who encountered this. :-)

You can find When Monkeys Fly! at your local nail salons and beauty stores such as Ulta and Dillard's for a retail price of $9 for 0.5 fl oz.

  1. Ugh taco glitter. I love tacos, but not in nail polish. I have seen pics of this as a jelly sandwich with some of the nude jellies in the collection and it looks really nice. I guess the sandwich tames the taco glitter for the most part. Of course, that isn't enough to get me to buy it.

    1. Haha I love tacos too as a food! :D If you put enough layers on top of the glitters, they doesn't stick up off of the nails, but you can still see that they are bendy... so it's not ideal.

  2. This polish is definitely unique, and it's awesome that they will refund the polishes!
But I agree that it's kinda funky, and not really my favorite in the world.

  4. Thanks for being honest about this polish. I like the wizard of oz so much that I couldn't resist getting it, curling glitters and all. It looks pretty on you though.

  6. I hate to say it, but this is honestly the first polish from the collection that I don't like. :( I love glitter, but not when it turns curly and bumpy! At least OPI is owning up to it.

  7. Yes, that is amazing, how could they miss that- it's the obvious thing to watch out for when using huge glitters like that...

    1. Yep, the defect is so obvious. Not sure how they didn't see it.

  9. It looks so pretty to me in the bottle, it's such a shame the formula's so bad. I, too, am surprised OPI let this one pass. Good on them for finally owning up to it, though.

  11. Hi Yun - I am with most of the above bloggers, I just wonder which badges don't have curling glitter since I have not seen any pictures of flat glitters - what do you think it would look like on a dark base? The combination looks lovely on you!!! <3 - Christine

    1. I'm glad you like the combo, Christine! I haven't tried with a dark base, but I imagine it would look quite classy (disregarding the curling glitters of course). :-)

  13. I like the idea of this polish but the size and curling glitter kind of ruin it for me.

  14. This could have looked so adorable in a jelly sandwich--and I was really excited about it from the promo pics--but yeah, the tacos, I just can't. :/

    1. Yea, unfortunately even in a jelly sandwich you can still see the glitters curling. It had a lot of potential, but it didn't live up to it. :(

  15. I honestly don't like this at all! It's actully even an ugly polish! I feel that it's a bit strange that they have put this in that collection. The black sheep in the family!
